re:publica 2016

Short thesis:

Comics have spent centuries catering to the tastes of boys and men, and populating their fictional worlds with women who are victims, harlots, harpies and dopes. But an army of powerful, quirky, fast-thinking heroines is emerging, and they are inspiring women to pick up a pen and tell their own stories in comic form.

Description:

Saroja Coelho introduces this new generation of heroines and asks what impact of their stories and images have on mainstream culture. We meet the Rat Queens, the new Ms Marvel (a 16-year-old Pakistani-American Muslim), Carol Danvers (the incredible Captain Marvel) and many other heroines who are smashing down barriers in the comic universe.
