Short thesis:

Torstraßen Festival: For the 6th time Torstraßenfestival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, June 5-6, in Berlin-Mitte. In cooperation with venues, cafes, shops and bars in our neighborhood we present a musical matinee showcase with a current leftfield and cross-genre soundtrack. We see ourselves and our festival goers as explorers, who are not afraid to trust their curiosity instead of big headliners. We strive to be a forum for current and relevant development within Berlin’s music scenes: for locals, transients and their influencers.

Description:

Magic Island came to be from a suffocated abyss of ecstasy and torture, like any relationship of give and take. There are no lies, and there is no in between. This is the ethos and emotion of the music and the woman-- when the pain is strong, the love proves stronger, something to be noted in our day and time. This is the feeling that the saccharine melodies and raw vocals intonate through the works of Intoxicated Sunset and Wasted Dawn EPs, soon showing redeveloped through debut LP Like Water. Initialised by the finding of a Casio keyboard of the streets of Neukölln in Berlin, Magic Island developed her signature synth melodies and unexpected harmonies through this innocence and naiveté, providing a sanctuary between digital and analog production.

Magic's first EP, Intoxicated Sunset, was an experimental daze between realms of dream and reality. The second EP followed, bringing a bittersweet, more existential realisation of being and the struggles to remain intact through all of the processes, exemplified by hook and rhythm tracks like 'Baby Blu' and 'So Tender'. Like Water, due to release in August 2016, delivers the definition of musical relativity, remaining honest and raw while accepting a growth and maturity in sound, production and experience, while still accepting the fear in this progression. This is honest, and if you are not ready for that, beware. Your tears may fall harder than your words. With collaborations and influence from Sean Nicholas Savage, Berlin producer Karolini, Touchy Mob, Normal Echo and Better Person, Like Water delivers an eclectic assortment of songs for the bedroom, songs for the club, and songs for the confusion.

This simple, eloquent, and fearless charm has captured the hearts and souls of many, through consuming performances at SXSW, Fusion Festival, The Lab Magazine's Regenerate event series, C/O Pop Festival, and openings for Tune-yards (4AD), Soft Metals (Captured Tracks), Hundred Waters (OWSLA), Ballet School (Bella Union), James K (UNO), and many more.
