Jan Martin Scharf wurde 1974 in Köln geboren. Er arbeitete als Radiomoderator, Matrose, Kameraassistent und Reporter bei Dokumentarfilmen und Reportagen. 2004 erwarb er an der Kunsthochschule für Medien in Köln das Diplom mit dem Spielfilm "Wahrheit oder Pflicht". Seitdem arbeitet er als Regisseur (u.a. „Dessau Dancers“) und als Drehbuchautor mit Co-Autor Arne Nolting unter anderem für "Wilsberg", „Friesland“, „Weinberg“ und „Club der Roten Bänder“. Er erhielt unter anderem den Hochschulfilmpreis in Gold Filmfest München (2002), den Studio Hamburg Nachwuchspreis Bester Film (2004),  den Deutschen Fernsehpreis (2016),  zwei Grimmepreise (2016) sowie mehrere Auszeichnungen auf int. Filmfestivals u. a. den Silver Zenith Best First Feature in Montreal (2005).

In 2004, he received his degree from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne for the feature film “Truth or Dare” (Wahrheit oder Pflicht). Since that time, he has worked as a director (“Dessau Dancers”, among other projects), and as a screenwriter with co-author Arne Nolting, with credits for films including “Wilsberg”, “Friesland”, “Weinberg”, and “The Red Band Society” (Club der Roten Bänder). He has received the Hochschulfilmpreis in Gold at the Munich International Film Festival (2002), the Studio Hamburg Nachwuchspreis for best film (2004), a German Television Award (2016), two Grimme Awards (2016), and numerous awards at international film festivals, including the Silver Zenith Best First Feature in Montreal (2005).
